President Trump is reportedly thinking about making an appearance at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 27.
Trump has refrained from attending the event the past two years as president, but this time around he hasn’t ruled out participating or speaking this year, Axios reports. Nothing is finalized and it’s unclear how interested Trump is in attending.
The dinner, known for being a venue for the media and politicians to rub elbows with celebrities, has long featured a stand-up act by a featured comedian. But after comedian Michelle Wolf’s controversial routine last year, in which she made controversial jokes about White House press secretary Sarah Sanders and abortion, historian Ron Chernow was picked as the featured speaker for this year’s dinner.
The news about Trump mulling an appearance at the dinner comes days after special counsel Robert Mueller concluded his Russia investigation. According to Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the report, Mueller found no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. The obstruction question remains an open one, even though Barr said he decided there is insufficient evidence of a crime.
Upon the release of Barr’s summary, Trump claimed he was exonerated and also continued his attacks on the media.
“The Mainstream Media is under fire and being scorned all over the World as being corrupt and FAKE,” Trump tweeted Tuesday. “For two years they pushed the Russian Collusion Delusion when they always knew there was No Collusion. They truly are the Enemy of the People and the Real Opposition Party!”
