The Washington region is gearing up for National Night Out — an annual event that connects police and communities to prevent crime. Police departments across the area are hosting outdoor activities Tuesday evening. Events include block parties, games and entertainment at schools, community centers and other sites.
Police hope the event encourages people to get to know their neighbors and work together on anti-crime initiatives. It also aims to build relationships among police, neighborhood groups and citizens.
All area police agencies are sponsoring events. Find activities in your neighborhood at nationalnightout.org or from your local police department.
Last year, more than 37 million people participated in National Night Out events, according to the National Association of Town Watch.
