Shanahan says Haynesworth not on trading block

If the Redskins end up trading defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, it’s not because they feel they have to. It would be because they got an offer they, well, couldn’t refuse.

“There has been no mention of trading Haynesworth or any other players,” coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday after the third and final minicamp practice. “The only person I’ve allowed to talk to other teams is Jason Campbell. I want to get a feel for what we have. I’m not looking to trade anybody.”

Haynesworth has not worked out in Washington this offseason, opting to work with a private trainer in Tennessee. He hasn’t publicly stated his thoughts on the change in Washington’s defensive scheme. But he was vocal about his dislike about how he was used by the previous staff.

Shanahan reiterated that he’d like every player to train in Ashburn.

“What I’ve found out is with players especially as they get older, if they don’t really have a commitment to the offseason program they get pulled hamstrings, quads,” Shanahan said. “They can’t stay healthy and anytime you can work out with your teammates it’s a big plus. For those people that don’t do that there’s a downside. As you get older it’s harder to push yourself to the next level. … I’m hoping Albert comes in in great shape and can help our team win. We’ve made a big investment in him. Hopefully he can come in, stay healthy and play at a level that can help us win.”

As for what Haynesworth will play this season, if he remains in Washington, it won’t strictly be nose tackle. In fact, he’d most likely be a right end most of the time. He’ll also play tackle when the Redskins use a 4-3 on passing downs.

“He’d be special in this defense,” coordinator Jim Haslett said.

Shanahan did not want to discuss whether Haynesworth was upset about the change in defenses.

“I don’t worry about people that aren’t here,” he said.
