Last night, the Charleston Post & Courier ran an article breaking the news that Donald Trump had picked South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to become the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. This morning, sources confirmed that Trump will indeed choose Haley the next UN Ambassador. It will be announced later today.
Why is Nikki Haley a good choice?
1. Nikki Haley understands foreign policy:
Governor Haley hasn’t served in an official position as far as foreign policy, but she is very engaged in foreign policy and has a strong understanding of it. The founder of Foreign Policy Initiative, and former Romney/Ryan adviser had this to say about Governor Haley, “Critics will ask if Nikki Haley has been engaged in international affairs. I’ve had conservations with her on and off over the years. She has a strong worldview.”
As governor, Haley does have experience dealing with trade and labor issues, which will be valuable to her as our next ambassador.
2. Nikki Haley is a strong and proven leader:
Governor Haley is a strong and proven leader. She has handled crises such as the Charleston shooting and Hurricane Matthew with strong and graceful leadership. Haley is a leader who can bring people together and handle anything that is thrown her way.

3. Nikki Haley understands American values:
As the UN Ambassador, Haley will need to be able to communicate the values of America to the United Nations. Governor Haley understands American values deeply, as a daughter to Indian immigrants; she understands what makes America such a special place. Over the years, she has also proven to be a gifted communicator, delivering the GOP response to President Obama’s final State of the Union speech, or speaking at other venues like CPAC, Haley as proven she can communicate the values of America and stand up to anyone.
4. Nikki Haley has been critical of Donald Trump:
Governor Haley did vote for Donald Trump and even expressed excitement over his victory. However, she was critical of Trump during the election. This is very helpful. The most powerful man in the world needs to have people around him who will give him advice, guide him in the right direction, and offer pushback when needed. Governor Haley has proved she will do just that.
Conservatives should be excited about this choice. Americans should be thrilled about this announcement. Nikki Haley has an understanding of foreign policy, she is a proven leader, will communicate American interests, and will be a guide for the president.
