More than 200 arrested total for Kavanaugh hearings protests

More than 200 protesters have been arrested by U.S. Capitol Police in the first three days of the Senate’s confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

A total of 69 people were taken into custody Thursday, USCP spokeswoman Eva Malecki said in a statement issued late Thursday.

On Wednesday, 73 protesters were taken into custody on similar charges. Police arrested 61 people on Tuesday.

Thirty-seven people were removed from the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room in the Hart Senate Office Building Thursday and charged with disorderly conduct.

Nineteen protesters were escorted out of a different room in the same building and charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.

Another dozen people were removed from outside the room for taking part in illegal demonstrations. That group was charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.

One man who was arrested in the committee room was also charged with resisting arrest, simple assault, and disruption of Congress.

The hearings will continue Friday as Republican and Democrats call witnesses to testify on Kavanaugh’s fitness to serve as a Supreme Court justice.
