Portman outlines Senate agenda

If Republicans take control of the Senate in the fall, Sen. Rob Portman believes they could get four things done quickly.

These areas, which the Ohio Republican identified “common ground,” between Republicans and Democrats, would be “great for the economy,” he told reporters at a breakfast Thursday sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.

The four efforts would be: passing the Keystone XL pipeline, giving President Obama trade promotion authority, easing federal regulations and reforming the tax code.

A GOP-controlled Senate would also make efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with other healthcare measures, Portman said.

Portman also said a Republican Senate majority would help President Obama have a productive final two years as president.

“When we have divided government, that’s when we’ve done tax reform, that’s when we’ve done entitlement reform, that’s when we’ve helped to move the economy forward when we take on these big issues,” he said.

When asked about running for president in 2016, Portman said he’ll “take a look at it after the election” — he is currently the finance chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
