Iverson reportedly is bankrupt despite making — get this — approximately $155 million in his NBA career. Who would have thought a huge entourage, many cars and expensive jewelry would land you in a hole?
But now his earnings are being garnished to help pay an $860,000 jewelry bill in Georgia. Enter the Rochester Lancers of the Major Indoor Soccer League, who have offered him a contract for $20,000 per game. They’d also pay him $5,000 per goal scored. Of course, they only have two more games this season.
Iverson, who reportedly might pursue basketball gigs in Turkey, Venezuela or Puerto Rico, is following the path of other ex-athletes. Terrell Owens, who made approximately $80 million in the NFL, is playing for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League because he’s broke. And Jose Canseco, who made more than $40 million in his career and also needs cash, is attempting a comeback in the Mexican League.
