Washington is second nationwide in the building of “green” roofs, trailing only Chicago, according to the sixth annual survey by a leading industry association.
Green Roofs for Healthy Cities says more than 190,000 square feet of vegetative roofs were installed in the District in 2009. An environmentally friendly green roof system is an extension of an existing roof system and involves plants and a growing medium over a drainage system and water proofing system.
The federal government is shifting some of its policies and funding to include green infrastructure, and the District is in the middle of hosting the Green Roofs & Walls Conference and Training. GRHC says the green roofs industry grew nearly 17 percent last year nationwide.
