Former D.C. United and Virginia midfielder Joe Vide‘s post-soccer career has been thrown a serious curveball, as the 25-year-old has found himself in a battle with Hodgkin’s disease, the same condition that United head coach Curt Onalfo also battled in his 20s. Vide, who had stints in New York and San Jose before landing in Washington in 2008, had been working on finishing college after bouncing around since he left United.
“I never imagined that something like this could be so life changing but there is really no other way to describe it,” said Vide. “One minute I am finishing my degree at the University of Virginia, starting to pursue a career in either government work or with in the military; and the next minute I am spending every moment trying to understand the cancer that has invaded my body and deal with the financial burden that goes with it.”
