BMW driver killed after crashing into a Landover KFC

Updated: The driver killed in the crash has been identified as 29-year-old Hellena Louise Smith, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department.

One person was killed in an incident in which a BMW crashed into a Landover KFC, police said.

Police received a call about a crash in the 6700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, Prince George’s Police spokesman Cpl. Larry Johnson said.

A preliminary investigation found that a black BMW traveling eastbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Highway at a high speed crashed into the KFC. Before it struck the restaurant, the vehicle also hit other objects — including a car backing out of the KFC parking lot, Johnson said.

The driver of the BMW, a 29-year-old woman, was ejected from the vehicle and died. The passenger in the BMW, a 31-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and the driver of the car that was struck was also taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Johnson said.

Police said they believe speed and alcohol were factors in the incident.
