PAWLING, N.Y. (AP) — Combat veterans who are hiking the Appalachian Trail as part of the “Walk Off The War” program are continuing their trek to Maine after getting a heroes’ welcome in Dutchess County.
Six combat veterans and Warrior Hike founder Sean Gobin have completed more than 1,400 miles of the 2,186-mile through-hike of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. They were welcomed in Pawling Sunday by Congressman Chris Gibson and numerous state and local officials and community groups.
The Warrior Hike program supports returning combat veterans’ transition to civilian life. Officials say the trek gives veterans a chance to process their wartime experiences with others who have been through the same thing.
