Rep. Ilhan Omar put politics aside to compliment first lady Melania Trump’s job decorating the White House for Christmas.
“This is beautifully decorated and can be appreciated if we don’t allow our politics to dilute everything,” Omar said on Twitter in response to a tweet from the first lady showing the decorations.
“During this special time of the year, I am delighted to share ‘America the Beautiful’ and pay tribute to the majesty of our great nation,” Trump said in her tweet, accompanied by a video showing her walking through the decorated White House. “Together, we celebrate this land we are all proud to call home.”

Not all of the congresswoman’s followers, however, shared her sentiment, with many commenting that the White House shouldn’t be decorated with a Christian theme.
“We are not a Christian nation. IMHO, the White House should not be decorated to suggest that,” one comment said. “They didn’t decorate for any other religious holidays, did they?”

“Yes. It’s beautiful. And also religious. America the Christian,” another comment said. “What would happen if a Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, etc were President and they spent so much time and money to decorate for their own major holiday? Outrage. That’s what.”

Others said that Omar shouldn’t put politics aside to compliment the first lady.
“You do not, under any circumstances, ‘gotta hand it to them,’” one comment said.
“Yeah, you can just say nothing,” another user agreed. “Which is what should have been done here.”

The decorations were installed over the Thanksgiving weekend by volunteers.
