It’s a light day, folks. Such is life when it’s just a special teams workout. But, thanks to Dominique Dorsey we have a dud. Which means we have copy.
Studs
DE J.D. Skolnitsky. He returned to practice after missing nearly a week with a hamstring injury. That is cause for celebration for Skolnitsky.
DT Anthony Montgomery. He was on the field for a second straight day. Considering the competition along the D-line, that’s a good sign. But this was about special teams. So the big fella was rambling upfield on the kick return unit. As a blocker, of course. Privately, we long for the day they give Ol’ Monty the ball — and then get out of the way.
DB Kevin Barnes. On a dril where the purpose is to bat the ball from the holder, then recover the loose ball, Barnes was good. On his two turns, he batted the ball and easily scooped it up both times. Rock Cartwright is excellent at this as well. Special teams coach Danny Smith is very detailed on this, showing them precisely how to hold their hands as they make contact with the ball; do it the right way and get a true bounce. That’s what Barnes did and that’s what Cartwright always does.
Duds
KR Dominique Dorsey. OK, here’s the deal. Dorsey and the other returners were simply supposed to throw the ball up about 5-10 feet in the air to simulate a kick coming their way, catch it and then run. Alas, Mr. Dorsey fumbled his first attempt. Just dropped the ball. He’s had somewhat shaky hands in camp already. But we were thankful; if not for this mishap we’d have no dud.
