Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, tweeted for the first time in more than two years to honor the late Sen. John McCain on Sunday.
In the tweet, Abedin hearkened back to how the Arizona Republican defended her years ago against unsubstantiated allegations by House Republicans that she was part of a Muslim Brotherhood conspiracy to infiltrate the U.S. government.
“Senator McCain once said, ‘Our reputations, our character, are the only things we leave behind when we depart this earth,'” she said in a tweet, referring to a statement McCain made in 2012 while Abedin was an aide to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Abedin also said she was at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Saturday where a memorial service was held for McCain. There he was praised by high profile speakers like former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. “Being in the cathedral celebrating him showed that words can only strive to capture the greatness of his character. What a legacy to leave on this earth,” Abedin said in her tweet.
Abedin last tweeted in July 2016, during Clinton’s presidential campaign, in recognition of the month Ramadan observed by Muslims.
