Sen. Bob Menendez indicted on federal corruption charges

New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez has been indicted on federal corruption charges.

The charges against Menendez, who has held office since 2006, stem from a months-long Justice Department and FBI investigation into his ties to Dr. Salomon Melgen, a Florida doctor and longtime donor, according to multiple news reports.

Specific charges in the indictment were not immediately available. Both the Justice Department and FBI declined to comment.

The charges against Menendez come at an awkward time — as the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he is a top voice against the Obama administration’s policies toward Iran and Cuba.

News first broke of the impending federal corruption charges in early March. Menendez is expected to be arraigned in federal court as early as Thursday.
