Water main break causes roadway collapse in downtown D.C.

A water main break caused a section of 14th Street NW to collapse Saturday morning, D.C. transportation and water officials said.

District Department of Transportation spokesman John Lisle said 14th Street NW between F and and G Streets is closed as crews investigate and make repairs.

A leak in a 6-inch water main caused the street to cave in, D.C. Water spokesman Alan Heymann said. Crews were still working to determine the extent of the damage and how long it would take to repair. But he said late Saturday morning that officials were “hopeful 14th Street will be open for the Monday rush hour, if not sooner.”

Lisle said the break caused a “rather significant hole” in the road. The damage stretches across at least two lanes of the street.

The street caved in sometime before 9 a.m., Lisle said.
