America reacts: Chauvin trial aftermath

No sooner had the jury announced a verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, then the nation’s attention turned to another police-involved shooting, this one in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday afternoon.

A police officer there has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of him fatally shooting a knife-wielding 15-year-old girl in the very moment she was preparing to jab it into another girl. The incident illustrates the split-second decisions that police often have to make and illustrate the increasing risk to officers as political interests take sides in the broader debate over effective policing amid accusations of racial discrimination.
