Ed Asner calls GOP primary issues “crap”

TV’s former tough talking editor Lou Grant is still speaking bluntly. When asked about the 2012 primaries, actor Ed Asner has only one word: “crap.”

Asner, reprising his role as “August March” on an upcoming Hawaii Five-0 episode, told nationally syndicated America’s Morning News Monday, “the crap that’s espoused as causes is shocking.”

Worse, he told host John McCaslin, if any of the GOP candidates win the election and get a chance to put their promises into policy, it might be time to run for the hills. “If they implemented after they’ve spoken the way they have, then I really fear for this country,” said Asner.

Despite his left-leaning politics, Asner expressed support for Ron Paul’s efforts to limit U.S. engagements overseas. “I like Ron Paul,” he said. But he added that Paul’s domestic stances make him too much of a Republican to back.

He has recently also been talking up the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt and continued on the show, charging that the GOP is working “to tear down his reputation and his achievements.” Asner said there’s only one place for a former president as great as he thinks FDR was. “He belongs on Mt. Rushmore.”
