Author upstaged by Marion Barry

When you’re known for profiling some of history’s craziest cats, your book party is bound to have some surprises, including appearances by Roger Stone and Dave “Mudcat” Saunders.

As the Weekly Standard’s Matt Labash was looking out at his guests halfway through the party Thursday celebrating the release of his latest book, “Fly Fishing with Darth Vader: And Other Adventures with Evangelical Wrestlers, Political Hitmen, and Jewish Cowboys,” he heard cheers and chants.

“Speech, speech, speech,” the crowd yelled, staring in the direction of the honored guest.

“I’m not going to give a speech,” Labash bashfully said. He even mentioned earlier in the night he wasn’t into giving speeches.

But the guests didn’t seem to notice.

What got their attention? It was former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry walking through the hallway. Labash was standing out of view and was completely unaware one of his most famous profiles had just walked through the door.

The largely conservative group begged Barry to speak, and Labash looked back unaware. Our spies told us the confusion lasted for a long two to three minutes, with Labash finally laughing it off with the crowd.
