Headboards are key to warm, inviting beds

A peaceful bedroom is fast becoming the most coveted room in any home. The size of a bedroom takes a back seat to the ambiance and feeling generated in this special place where you go at the end of a hard day. And these days, solace is a highly prized commodity. We are navigating through really hard times and, more than ever, it is valuable to create a sense of reprieve and comfort in our homes.

This bedroom was a small master in a bay front condominium. Still, we managed to create a real sense of warmth and drama. The headboard is actually an architectural fragment from China and is dated around 1765.

This piece was purchased for about $700. Walls were softened by wonderful butterscotch-colored pieces of Tibetan handmade paper sheets. Paint could be used to deliver the same glow for a great deal less money. It is the tone that is most important to the feeling of a room. Though this client owned a suite of wonderful watercolors, the room could have stood on its own without the artwork.

For fun, I bought an antique Chinese baby bassinette and used it to hold a gorgeous pillow. They have no function other than to stamp the room with a feeling of softness! Dreamy bed pillows and the duvet cover were fashioned from a vintage Japanese silk kimono brought back by the client’s father after World War II. This at once made use of an article that was boxed away and turned it into something unique for the room.

You do not need a lot in a bedroom to make it feel special. In fact, experts advise that you remove your television if you are interested in the best night’s rest possible. So if we had to create a short list of suggestions, they would be: Eliminate clutter, and clean up your room and closet. Remove the television. Introduce a color on the walls by painting the walls or applying wall covering. Pay attention to the lighting in the room and try to introduce varying levels of light. This can be accomplished with a floor lamp that offers adjustable control, recessed lighting or table lamps with a three-way bulb so you can achieve different strengths of lighting.

Never be afraid to look at gently used pieces of furniture and accessories. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure! In these hard times, seek out modestly priced retail sources like Target, Wal-Mart, Ross, Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. Try Home Depot, Lowe’s and Ikea for reasonably priced furniture and accessories.
