Republicans take the New York state Senate

This news, fully expected, came in over the weekend:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Republicans will regain control of the New York Senate after a recount completed Saturday handed control of a key seat on Long Island to the GOP candidate.
The final vote tally gave Republican Jack Martins a narrow win over Democratic Sen. Craig Johnson in the 7th Senate District. Johnson says he will appeal.

This gives the GOP a much-needed seat at the table during redistricting. Recent experience has shown that nearly all of the GOP’s upstate districts are quite iffy, and could probably have been gerrymandered over the edge if Democrats had been given complete control.
