A new poll shows Hillary Clinton has slipped a little in New York, but still holds a healthy lead over Donald Trump.
The Siena College Research Institute poll released Tuesday shows the Democratic candidate holds a 51-30 lead over Trump, a 21-point advantage that’s down 4 points from last month.
Though recent polls suggest that Trump is making it a competitive race around the country, the researchers at Siena College noted that “Clinton holds her base better than Trump holds his.”
“She leads with Democrats 75-10 percent, while Trump holds a 67-16 percent lead with Republicans. Independent voters are closely divided, with 39 percent supporting Clinton and 37 percent backing Trump,” said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg in a statement. “Clinton leads by a whopping 52 points in New York City and 6 points upstate; they are virtually even in the downstate suburbs.
However, they note that her approval among women has narrowed.
“The gender gap has narrowed and Clinton now leads by 22 points with women, down from 36 points last month, and 18 points with men, up from 10 points. While the two run virtually even with white voters, Clinton has the support of 85 percent of black voters and 86 percent of Latinos,” Greenberg said. “She leads by 26 points with voters under 35, and by 16 points with those 55 and older. She leads by eight points with Catholics, 14 points with Jews and 21 points with Protestants.”
Clinton has a 52-46 percent favorability rating, about the same as the 51-46 percent reported last month. But 58 percent of voters said she is neither honest or trustworthy.
Trump’s favorability rating has improved, but is still far behind Clinton’s. His ratio improved to 29-68, up from 24-72 last month.
The telephone-based poll of 600 likely New York State voters was conducted Sept. 11-15. It has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
