Japan athletes auction items for tsunami relief

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s Olympic medalists are auctioning items online to help raise money to support reconstruction efforts in areas devastated by last year’s earthquake and tsunami.

The auction started Monday and will run until Aug. 12 with proceeds going to the “Yell for Japan” charity project which is sponsored in part by the Japanese Olympic Committee.

So far, an autographed judo uniform worn by men’s 60-kilogram silver medalist Hiroaki Hiraoka and a T-shirt signed by women’s 48-kg weightlifting silver medalist Hiromi Miyake have been sold through the auction, the JOC said.
