DROUGHT DOMINATES: Prices for corn and soybeans rose on fading hopes that rains will rescue parched crops across the nation’s heartland. Many analysts say no amount of rain can repair the damage in corn fields, although it could benefit some of the soybean crop.

GOLDEN MOVE: Gold topped $1,600 an ounce for the first time in nearly three weeks on speculation that some central banks, including the Federal Reserve, may take steps to promote economic growth.

UPS, DOWNS: Prices rose for oil, silver, industrial metals and wheat. Wholesale gasoline, natural gas and cotton fell.
