Now that the United Kingdom has voted for Brexit, could the United States be next? Congressman Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) resurrected his plan for #Amexit over Facebook with a bill he sponsored.
The bill, H.R. 1205 or the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2015, would terminate U.S. membership with the United Nations and close the U.S. Mission there.
The over 4,100 reactions on Facebook were positive, and there were also over 5,000 shares. The Congressman’s account also responded to some of the comments.
When asked why the bill would be good, and what the benefits would be, it came down to “Sovereignty. As a member of the UN, we bind our citizens to decisions made by undemocratic countries, when in fact our constitution should be the supreme law.”
In addition to Massie’s idea of #Amexit, other user ideas included “U Nexit” and “Americourt.”
Massie explained over Twitter that the bill has been referred to committee on foreign affairs and has yet to receive action.
Time for #amexit? I’m a cosponsor of H.R. 1205 to get the US out of the UN. #brexit pic.twitter.com/9o3UcdkPzA
