The U.S. Navy is investigating reports that a female Marine found a camera hidden in a women’s restroom aboard the USS Arlington in March.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has been looking for answers since then. According to a military official, the device found can take photos, but it is unclear if it can record video.
“To protect the legal rights and the privacy of all involved, we cannot release details, names or any other identifying information at this time,” Sixth Fleet spokesman Cdr. Kyle Raines said.
The USS Arlington is docked in Greece after starting its seven-month deployment in December.
Raines said the Navy/Marine Corps team takes all reports of sexual harassment seriously, and the team is taking these allegations seriously.
NCIS told NBC News it could not comment on the investigation.
Similar investigations have been launched in the past, including an incident on the USS Wyoming. Male sailors used iPods and iPads, both prohibited on the ship, and acted as lookouts while a friend filmed female shipmates undressing.
One sailor on the Wyoming said that he and a male peer rushed to secretly record each female while she was showering or changing during the three-month patrol. The sailor said this would happen several times a day.
After a report of the incident, the top submarine commander called this a “breach of trust.”
