This graphic illustrates sharp divides in perceptions of police by race

Reason has produced a graphic from the latest Reason-Rupe survey of perceptions of law enforcement by race:

Some of Reason’s findings are dramatic contrasts: 83 percent of African Americans and 62 percent of Hispanic Americans think the U.S. criminal justice system treats white Americans more fairly than minorities, whereas most whites responded that all races are treated equally.

82 percent of blacks and 72 percent of Hispanic Americans say that the police are too quick to use lethal force, while only 34 percent of whites feel the same.

73 percent of African-Americans and 67 percent of  Hispanics believe that the number of excessive force cases is increasing, to just 38 percent of whites.

And a staggering 67 percent of black and Hispanic Americans believe that police officers are “generally not held accountable for misconduct, while only 37 percent of white Americans had the same response.

Despite this, over 50 percent of all three racial groups held a favorable view of police, although whites were still much more likely to view them favorably. All groups had about the same views on police militarization: around 31-37 percent supported, and 57-67 percent opposed.

All this backs up polling data from past years. “Research consistently shows that minorities are more likely than whites to view law enforcement with suspicion and distrust,” according to the government’s National Institute of Justice. “Minorities frequently report that the police disproportionately single them out because of their race or ethnicity.”

And in polls studied in a 2004 paper from George Washington University, 54 percent of blacks and 38 percent of Hispanics said that the police “very” or “fairly” often stop people in the street of their neighborhood without good reason, compared to just 16 percent of white Americans.

Racial disparity in arrest rates has also gained a great deal of attention in recent years. Although blacks and whites use marijuana at the same rate, for example, blacks are 3.72 times more likely to be arrested for possession.
