Vice President Cheney, Lynne Cheney, Nancy Reagan, Ed Meese

and Jim Baker were among the hundreds of mourners for the late Michael Deaver Thursday morning at Washington National Cathedral.

Deaver, who was President Reagan’s communications guru, died of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 18 at the age of 69.

“Mike Deaver transformed our profession” of public relations, said Richard Edelman, for whose firm Deaver worked after leaving the White House.

Baker said that when Deaver meets Reagan in heaven, he would surely work on “improving the lighting at the pearly gates.”

Also giving tributes were Deaver’s friend Lex Sant and Henry Pierce, executive director of Clean & Sober Streets, the rehab and treatment center where Deaver volunteered.

Crooner Johnny Mathis sang “Amazing Grace.”
