Anyone who has heard of Tim Tebow surely knows that he is a Christian who is abstaining from sex until he is married. When the former Eagles football star, 28, split with former Miss USA, Olivia Culpo, 23 because Culpo reportedly couldn’t handle not having sex, the media went nuts.
The split shouldn’t have come as such a shock to anyone, not the media, and unfortunately not Culpo or Tebow either. This is not to judge or fault Culpo or Tebow, but it’s worth wondering what they were each expecting in the relationship with such different values.
Maxim seemed to get that. Their article doesn’t hold back from commenting on and complimenting Culpo’s body, but does so to commend Tebow for how he “stuck to his guns and refused advances made by Culpo.” They also note that they “could have seen this split coming.”
The media still ran with it — in a display to show just how immature they can be. The New York Daily News not only gleefully broke the news, on Thanksgiving, but went with this classy headline, “Tim Tebow still can’t find the end zone as girlfriend Olivia Culpo breaks it off over lack of sex.”
If they had paid any attention though, they would realize that it wasn’t that Tebow couldn’t “find the end zone,” they were referring to, but that he wasn’t even looking for it. But, that title certainly sells better.
What better gossip for a Thanksgiving meal. Perhaps focusing on the relationship woes of someone else could take the attention away from the rest of us.
The piece doesn’t just stop with the title. “For once, it’s not Tim Tebow who’s having trouble scoring – it’s his girlfriend,” was how the piece opened.
It turns out that the Daily News is aware of Tebow’s virginity pledge, which is addressed later in the piece. “It’s not the first time it has caused him to fumble in his love life,” is how the very next paragraph reads.
The Daily News isn’t the only outlet to resort to such “reporting,” though. Newsbusters noted them as the main culprit, but also pointed to CBS Tampa Bay, which similarly started their piece with writing “apparently an NFL job isn’t the only thing Tim Tebow can’t hold onto.”
Sportingnews also went for the football career reference, but managed to do so in a classier manner:
Then dumped him when he had the gall to steadfastly stay himself.
It’s one thing to come up with clever titles and opening paragraphs. It’s another thing entirely when it seems the media is trying to be as cringe-worthy as possible.
