The Alexandria Fire Department will go out of service for 48 hours to honor a fallen paramedic.

Joshua Weissman, 33, of Bristow, died last week when he fell off an overpass after getting out of his ambulance on Interstate 395.

The fire department will be out of service from Wednesday night through Friday night. Neighboring jurisdictions will take the calls for the 265 members of the Alexandria Fire Department.

Visitation services will be held Wednesday night and funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Beth El Hebrew Congregation at 3930 Seminary Road in Alexandria.

City schools are letting out early Thursday and city officials say the funeral procession might cause major traffic problems near Seminary Road.

Weissman, who had been an Alexandria paramedic since 2006, was responding to a three-car crash and fire near South Glebe Road when he got out of his ambulance and fell about 20 feet into Four Mile Run creek.
