The real reason Santorum is wearing sweater vests

Rick Santorum’s sweater vest is now a political icon of its own. After reporters in Iowa began joking about it on Twitter, a “Fear Rick’s Vest” Twitter account and Facebook page was started, sparking multiple parodies across the internet.

Santorum actually spoke to the New York Times for an article on his new found fashion trend, remarking that he began wearing them more often during his storm across Iowa in December.

But perhaps the real reason he chose the sweater, lies behind his campaign diet.

“You’ll notice I’m not buttoning my coat for a reason.” a sportcoat clad Santorum joked during his ‘victory’ speech in Iowa, noting that he traveled “across 99 counties, 381 town hall meetings and 36 Pizza Ranches.”

“Okay, I love Iowa,” he said with a laugh, “But the fare can be a little bit thickening.”
