John Legend battles Trump Jr. on Twitter

Pop star John Legend and Donald Trump Jr. got into an online debate Friday.

“Ha 5 students when asked why they were protesting couldn’t even answer,” Trump Jr. said in one of a series of tweets bemoaning the protest that resulted in Trump senior canceling a Friday night rally in Chicago.

“The participation medal/micro aggression generation is pretty sad!” Trump Jr., added, mimicking his father’s frequent use of the word “sad” followed by an exclamation point.

That claim prompted a pointed reply from Legend, a singer who often speaks out on political issues.

“@DonaldJTrumpJr I think they were protesting your racist father,” Legend responded.

“Here we go again. That can’t be the answer for everything you don’t like,” Trump Jr. retorted. “That’s why the country is so divided now!”

The disagreement has deep roots. Legend, whose given name is John Stephens, and Trump overlapped for three years as undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania.

Donald Trump Sr. frequently notes that he attended the university’s business school, Wharton, as an undergraduate.

“The Donalds and I graduated from the same University, funny enough,” Legend wrote.
