Election News 2010: New York

State of Play:

Both of New York’s Senate seats are up for grabs in this year’s election. The one held by Chuck Schumer, D, is considered safe, but appointed Sen. Kirsten Gilibrand, D, could be in danger. Having dodged possible primaries from other Democratic office-holders within her state, she now faces a potential primary challenge from former Rep. Harold Ford of Tennessee. No credible Republican has declared so far, but Rep. Peter King and former Gov. George Pataki are both said to be considering the race. Mort Zuckerman, owner of the New York Daily News, could enter the race as a Republican or seek the Independence Party nomination.

Primary election: Sept. 14
