Former D.C. candidate sentenced for theft

A lawyer and former D.C. Council candidate was sentenced to six months behind bars for embezzling money intended for his clients. Deairich Hunter pleaded in January to theft of more than $100,000 in payments from insurance companies that were intended to settle some of his clients’ disability and personal injury claims. He admitted to settling claims without the knowledge of his clients and keeping the money for himself. Hunter unsuccessfully ran for an at-large D.C. Council seat in 2008.
