President Trump on Friday touted former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony to the Senate one day earlier as a victory for his administration and expressed his willingness to testify under oath to dispute Comey’s statements.
“Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction, we are doing really well, that was an excuse by the Democrats who lost an election that some people think they shouldn’t have lost,” Trump said of Comey’s testimony during an appearance Friday in the Rose Garden with the Romanian president.
“He’s a leaker, but we want to get back to running our great country,” Trump added.
Comey admitted, during a hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, that he had directed a friend to describe private conversations between the president and the former FBI director to a reporter with the hope that such revelations would lead to the appointment of a special counsel.
Trump said he was “100 percent” willing to testify under oath about his versions of events. His outside counsel, Marc Kasowitz, said in a statement on Thursday that the president never asked Comey to pledge his personal loyalty or to abandon his investigation of a close associate, as the former FBI director alleged.
