Steny Hoyer hospitalized with pneumococcal pneumonia

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., was hospitalized with pneumonia Tuesday and remains under medical watch at a D.C. hospital on the Fourth of July, an office spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

“Mr. Hoyer was admitted to the George Washington University Hospital yesterday and was diagnosed with pneumococcal pneumonia,” Katie Grant, Hoyer’s spokeswoman, said in a statement. “He is being treated with antibiotics and resting, and is expected to make a full recovery quickly. He looks forward to being back at work very soon.”

Hoyer, a Democrat from Maryland, is 79 years old and has been the second-highest ranking House Democrat for 15 years.

Prior to being hospitalized, Hoyer had been campaigning with Democratic candidates and incumbents in Wisconsin and Illinois. The trip marked his 25th campaign outing during the 2018 cycle.
