The Examiner was first to speak with D.C. United co-managing partner Victor MacFarlane following Saturday night’s embarrassing 3-0 loss to Chivas USA, a defeat which has put United’s fading playoff hopes in doubt with three regular season games remaining. D.C. has lost seven of eight matches in all competitions — including six in a row — since winning the U.S. Open Cup final on Sept. 3.
“We’ve spent a lot of money so we’re extremely disappointed in not having the results that we were expecting,” said MacFarlane. “We thought we were adding a few pieces that would take us to a championship instead of the bottom of the league. Not only are we bad, but we paid to be bad.”
The $1.9 million addition of Argentinian playmaker Marcelo Gallardo headlined five South American signings by United last offseason. MacFarlane said the team would probably increase its scouting this winter, hinting that it may take a different shape.
“I think we should be looking more in Africa,” he said. “We certainly should be upping our domestic scouting. This year we’ll have two first round draft choices. Top to bottom, we’re looking at everything.”
MacFarlane has not made any decisions about United head coach Tom Soehn or general manager Dave Kasper.
“The season’s not done yet so we’ll let it play out,” said MacFarlane. “Then, we’re going to evaluate every single person in the organization, including the owners.”
