Sessions: Trump doesn’t have to get specific yet

Sen. Jeff Sessions said Monday that presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump doesn’t need to get specific with his policies in his quest to win the White House.

“I think he does not need to get in the weeds with a whole lot of details,” the Alabama Republican told MSNBC Monday morning when asked if Trump needs to get policy specific.

“He wants to say that he needs to go forward with a plan that would strengthen our immigration system, make sure it serves our interests, and he needs to say that the trade deals, he’s going to fight for every single job,” Sessions explained.

Sessions was then asked if a potential president should have to explain what he wants to specifically do when he arrives in the White House.

“Well sure, he will do that, there’s no doubt about that,” Sessions replied.

“I think he could be more specific on trade, how he believes that trade is good for America and how he can show that we’ve had bad trade deals and how things are not working well. I think he needs to be more specific in articulating the pain that the average American is feeling now and why that’s happening,” Sessions said. “Instinctively, he’s got it, he’s talked about it and people are responding to it. But I think more detail could be helpful.”

Sessions endorsed Trump in February. In March, Sessions was named to chair Trump’s national security advisory committee, and he is set to speak Monday at the first night of the Republican convention in Cleveland.
