Megan Rapinoe shouldn’t be anybody’s ‘Woman of the Year’

Glamour magazine thinks soccer star Megan Rapinoe is “the unapologetic pink-haired icon we’ve needed in 2019.” In reality, she’s a terrible role model for women everywhere.

Glamour decided to select Rapinoe for their annual ‘Women of the Year’ shortlist, which highlights eight women they see as “remarkable women” and “warriors on the front lines of change.” And of course it’s true that Rapinoe accomplished a great deal this year, leading the U.S. Women’s National Team to victory at the Women’s World Cup and scoring six goals in the process.

But her personal escapades undermine all this accomplishment and disqualify her from deserving any sort of accolade. She has used her public platform to peddle in obnoxious self-victimhood, insult the country, display contempt for Americans, and lie about sexism in sports.

After gaining the national spotlight over the last year, Rapinoe hasn’t acted admirably, but rather she has disgraced herself time and time again. As I’ve written previously:

[Rapinoe] turned the women’s historic World Cup win into a political pissing match, when it could have been a bipartisan moment of unity for the country. When asked, Rapinoe said, ‘I’m not going to the f—ing White House.’ Plus, she has repeatedly knelt for the national anthem and said, ‘I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart. I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again.’ After her World Cup victory, Rapinoe and a teammate dropped the American flag on the ground to pose for a photo opp.

Is Rapinoe really the kind of role model Glamour thinks young girls should look up to? If so, parents everywhere would be well-advised to cancel their subscription.

And Rapinoe hasn’t just displayed callous contempt for the country that’s given her opportunities many of her competitors at the World Cup couldn’t dream of, she’s spread lies about it, too. Rapinoe has led the charge on the “pay gap” lawsuit against U.S. Soccer, alleging sexist pay discrimination. But her fake narrative of gender inequality has been debunked because in reality, U.S. Soccer literally pays the women players more than it pays the men.

Rapinoe is certainly smart enough to know all this, she just saw an opportunity to gin up outrage and make a bigger name for herself. This might be savvy and calculated, but it’s certainly not the kind of behavior you’d expect from the ‘woman of the year.’

Of course, it’s not exactly a surprise to see Rapinoe win Glamour’s recognition — the fawning liberal media has worshiped the soccer star endlessly despite all her faults. It’s just more proof that they’d lionize pretty much anybody willing to say bad things about Trump.
