The Fraternal Order of Police of Virginia has thrown its support behind Gov. Bob McDonnell’s ABC privatization plan.
“This rational approach of alternative funding will provide much-needed funds to help solve the state’s transportation problems,” Marty Williams, the state FOP president, wrote in a news release. “These transportation problems include making the state safer through better roads, safer bridges, and improved traffic control, all resulting in less accidents and better living for all of the citizens of…our state. We recognize that a good transportation system, just like a well paid and well trained law enforcement community, are the necessary elements to promote a peaceful and productive society.”
Concerns with the plan include potential social ills and effect on public safety, so the one-two punch of Jerry Falwell and the FOP could certainly give a public boost to the governor’s plan, which faces a tough fight.
Dana Schrad, executive director of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, said the group has remained neutral on the plan, but has been in talks with the governor’s staff about it.
“They have been very good talking with us about any public safety concerns we have with privatization,” she said.
