A Howard University Hospital employee is accused of selling medical records of patients, court records indicate.

Laurie Napper was charged Monday with wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information, a crime that carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Napper, who was employed as a medical technician in the general surgery department, obtained the medical records of Howard University Hospital patients and sold the names, addresses, dates of birth and Medicare numbers to another person, according to charging documents.

Napper was charged in federal court in D.C. by information, which typically means a plea deal is in the works because the information charge can’t be filed without the defendant’s consent.
