Poll: Americans struggling to remember VP candidates’ names

With Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton soaking up most of the limelight this election season, many Americans seem to be in the dark about the two gentlemen at the bottom of the ticket.

Over 40 percent of Americans can’t name the vice presidential nominees for either major party, says the findings of an online opinion poll released Sunday.

When asked to identify the VP candidates, 41 percent of respondents could not correctly name Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. Forty-six percent could not come up with the name of Clinton’s running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine.

Pence has served as Indiana’s governor since 2013, and previously was a U.S. congressman (2003-2013) and TV and radio host. Meanwhile Kaine has been one of two Democratic senators from Virginia since 2013, and prior to that was governor (2006-2010), chairman of the Democratic National Committee and mayor of Richmond, Va.

This may change this week as Pence and Kaine are set to face off in the first and only VP debate Tuesday night in Farmville, Va.

However, more than half of respondents said they don’t plan to tune into the event (64 percent), and even fewer (10 percent) said they think the VP debate will have a major impact on the November election.

The online ABC News/SSRS poll of 245 respondents 18 and older was conducted overnight from Sept. 29 to 30, and has a margin of error of 8.1 percentage points.
