A Bethesda attorney has admitted his role in an insurance-fraud scheme he ran with a chiropractor.

Amir Ryan Lahuti — sometimes referred to in court records as Ryan Amir Lahuti — pleaded guilty in federal court in Alexandria to conspiracy to commit mail fraud.

Prosecutors said Lahuti, a personal-injury lawyer with offices in Silver Spring and Langley Park, operated the scheme with chiropractor Jason Carle, who pleaded guilty last week.

After Lahuti was in an accident in May 2009, he asked Carle to fabricate patient files so he could submit fraudulent insurance claims, according to court records. He also used fake documents that Carle created to submit false claims to auto insurance companies for others.

Lahuti is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 5 and faces up to 20 years in prison. Carle is scheduled to be sentenced July 29 and faces the same penalty.
