Reports: Trump mulls Romney for secretary of state

President-elect Donald Trump will reportedly meet this weekend to discuss the possibility of naming Mitt Romney, who harshly and repeatedly denounced Trump as a “phony” during the presidential race, as his secretary of state.

Their meeting will also touch on the transition process more broadly, multiple outlets reported Thursday. CNN was first to report the story.

Trump has invited a wide variety of elected officials and policy experts to visit him at Trump Tower in Manhattan, where he has overseen transition proceedings since returning from Washington last week.

His meeting with Romney could signal a detente between the two Republicans, who traded barbs throughout the campaign season.

Romney said earlier this year that “dishonesty is Trump’s hallmark” and slammed him for withholding his tax returns from the public. Trump has referred to Romney as a “choker” who blew a winnable race against President Obama in 2012.
