Conservative commentator Bill Kristol said on Tuesday he agrees with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a 2020 presidential candidate, about making moves toward impeaching President Trump.
During a segment on MSNBC, the Never Trump leader shocked not only himself but his fellow panelists on his critique of Democratic leaders who have been hesitant to proceed with impeachment proceedings.
He said Democrats “shouldn’t do impeachment for the sake of defeating President Trump,” adding, “I must say I agree with Elizabeth Warren. I never thought I would say this.”
Laughter and exclamations of “wow” and “I was here” ensued, and host Chuck Todd said, “The Right is going to say: ‘Boy, Bill Kristol has really gone over the deep end.'”
Kristol said Democrats look “ridiculous” for being “so terrified about the word impeachment that we can’t even have hearings.”
Earlier in the day, Warren, D-Mass., took to the Senate floor earlier in the day and delivered a blistering rebuke of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who said “case closed” on the Russia investigation and chastised Democrats for refusing to accept special counsel Robert Mueller’s being unable to establish criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia.
“If any other human being in this country had done what’s documented in the Mueller report, they’d be arrested and put in jail,” Warren said, harping on the instances of possible obstruction of justice examined by Mueller. The special counsel did not clear Trump of obstruction of justice, but Attorney General William Barr said he determined that there is insufficient evidence to prove an obstruction crime. Democrats argue that Mueller’s report, which outlines 10 instances of possible obstruction, leaves it up to Congress to investigate and decide.
“We took an oath not to try and protect Donald Trump, we took an oath to protect and serve the Constitution of the United States of America, and the way we do that is we begin impeachment proceedings now against this president,” Warren added.
