HARVEY, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago suburb of Harvey has voted to name its community center after late poet Maya Angelou.
Harvey City Council members voted 6-0 on Monday night. The city will rename the Harvey Community Center to “The Dr. Maya Angelou Community Center of Harvey, Illinois.”
Angelou died May 28 at age 86. She was known worldwide as a literary pioneer and civil rights champion.
Harvey Mayor Eric J. Kellogg called Angelou “a pillar of strength for America” and says “a new light has been shined” on the city’s community center.
A city spokesman says a renaming ceremony will be scheduled for a later date.
