Morgan State beats cross-town rival for first time in nine tries

The Morgan State University women?s volleyball team entered its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule on a high note after winning at Hampton Tuesday. Three days earlier, the Bears notched their first win in nine matches against cross-town rival University of Maryland-Baltimore County in five games.

Freshman outside hitter Ivanti Bush had a career-best 31 kills to go with 14 digs for Morgan State (6-6) Saturday. The Bears also enjoyed 18 and 17 kills, respectively, from Esther Johnson and Jeniqua Moran. For her efforts, Bush earned MEAC player of the week honors.

“This was a collective win for our team and showed me that there is more than one player we can count on to win,” Morgan State coach Ramona Riley-Bozier said.

UMBC: The Retrievers (6-8) begin their America East Conference schedule at Hartford Friday following their loss to Morgan State. At the same time, freshman Ashley Oscars earned her third straight conference rookie of the week award. She had 24 kills in the loss to Morgan State.

LOYOLA: The Greyhounds enter Saturday?s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match with Siena on a two-match winning streak after beating Niagara Sunday. Blair Snyder and Karlee Woodward led the Greyhounds (4-14, 2-2) against Niagara with 13 and 12 kills, respectively.

TOWSON: The Tigers host Colonial Athletic Association rival Georgia State Friday after losing two straight matches. Ally Perko had a team-high 15 kills for Towson (11-5, 2-2).

NAVY: The Midshipmen (6-9, 1-1 in the Patriot League) host Army in Alumni Hall Friday night in the Star Match for the service academies. Lafayette swept Navy in its last match Saturday. Rachel Dougherty and Nikki England combined for 22 digs in the defeat.

COPPIN STATE: Four Eagles registered kills, but it wasn?t enough as they lost their MEAC opener in three games Tuesday at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Indira Laurencin had 12 kills, while Brittany Arvin finished with nine and Kanisha Sheppard had with eight. Coppin State dropped to 1-11.

GOUCHER: The Gophers (7-8) have cooled off considerably following a 6-0 start. Their loss to St. Mary?s Tuesday was their eighth in nine matches. They play at College of Notre Dame Thursday at 7 p.m.

JOHNS HOPKINS: The Blue Jays (9-8) begin Centennial Conference play this week after going 1-3 in the NYU Mid-Fall Classic in New York.

This came a week after they defended their Maryland Division III tournament title with a sweep over host St. Mary?s. The tournament featured all of the state?s Division III schools.
