Melania Trump criticizes Democrats and defends husband: ‘COVID-19 is not a partisan issue’

First lady Melania Trump defended her husband from Democratic criticism of his response to the coronavirus pandemic during a speech on Saturday.

The first lady attended a campaign event in West Bend, Wisconsin, and entered the room to shouts of “We love you!”

“COVID-19 is not a partisan issue,” she said. “In a time when unity and leadership is vital, the Democrats want to project feelings of fear and doubt, purely for political reasons.”

Trump also brought attention to some Democrats’ wariness about the development of a vaccine during the president’s tenure.

“Shame on anyone who casts doubt on the potential effectiveness of a vaccine just because it would come under my husband’s leadership,” said the first lady, to which the crowd expressed its agreement. “The success of a vaccine will save millions of lives, and we should all work towards that together as one nation.”

“This administration has worked tirelessly to support families and people struggling financially during this pandemic, while Democrats in Congress refuse to sign another stimulus package,” she added. “Such selfish, politically corrupt decisions are what separate the swamp politicians from President Trump and his administration.”

The president was not in attendance at the Wisconsin event. This is only the first lady’s second solo campaign appearance this year. He is instead spending the day in Pennsylvania, a state where he is 3.7 percentage points behind former Vice President Joe Biden in the most recent RealClearPolitics polling average.
