D.C. police are beefing up their presence in the Adams Morgan area to try to get a handle on a spike in crime in the popular bar and restaurant district.
The Third District, where Adams Morgan is located, has the highest volume of crime in the city, and the third-highest calls for service, police said. Violent crime in Adams Morgan is up 11 percent this year compared to last, while property crime is up 20 percent.
Police are targeting underage drinking, drunk driving, alcohol- and narcotic-related offenses, as well as quality of life issues.
“Over the next few weekends, MPD will deploy more officers and resources into the Adams Morgan area than seen in many years,” Capt. Aubrey Mongal said in a statement Thursday.
The first phase begins this weekend with law enforcement authorities ticketing drivers for parking restrictions. Uniformed and undercover cops will be teaming up with city agencies like the alcohol bureau and the public works department.
