Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump said Saturday that House Speaker Paul Ryan wishes he would have just endorsed the Trump for president instead of making news by balking at backing the billionaire.
In a speech in Spokane, Wash., Saturday, Trump said he was looking forward to meeting with the Wisconsin Republican next week.
“Things will be okay with Paul Ryan,” Trump said. “We’re gonna see what happens. He wants to meet. I’ll meet. The important thing is you folks, and I think he’ll understand that.”
Trump added: “If he could do it again, I’d think he’d do it the simple way: ‘I endorse Trump.'”
Ryan said earlier this week that he can’t endorse Trump’s presidency “right now.” He said Trump needs to change his positions on some key policies to convince Ryan that he is actually a conservative.
“Republicans need a standard bearer who bears our standards,” Ryan said.
A meeting between Trump and Ryan was arranged quickly. Trump said he’s hoping to get Ryan on his side, but if that doesn’t happen, it won’t bother him.
“I think Paul Ryan will be fine,” Trump said. “And if not, that’s okay,” Trump said.
